It transcends the limited scope of pure algebra by means of geometric construction principles. Moreover, Grothendieck?s schemes invented in the late 1950s allowed the application of algebraic-geometric methods in fields that formerly seemed to be far away from geometry (algebraic number theory, for example). The new techniques paved the way to spectacular progress such as the proof of Fermat?s Last Theorem by Wiles and Taylor. The scheme-theoretic approach to algebraic geometry is explained for non-experts whilst more advanced readers can use the book to broaden their view on the subject. A separate part studies the necessary prerequisites from commutative algebra. The book provides an accessible and self-contained introduction to algebraic geometry, up to an advanced level. Every chapter of the book is preceded by a motivating introduction with an informal discussion of the contents. Typical examples and an abundance of exercises illustrate each section. Therefore the book is an excellent solution for learning by yourself or for complementing knowledge that is already present. It can equally be used as a convenient source for courses and seminars or as supplemental literature. Because most data are observational, practitioners work with indirect noisy observations and ill-posed econometric models in the form of stochastic inverse problems. Consequently, traditional econometric methods in many cases are not applicable for answering many of the quantitative questions that analysts wish to ask. After initial chapters deal with parametric and semiparametric linear probability models, the focus turns to solving nonparametric stochastic inverse problems. In succeeding chapters, a family of power divergence measure-likelihood functions are introduced for a range of traditional and nontraditional econometric-model problems. Finally, within either an empirical maximum likelihood or loss context, Ron C. Mittelhammer and George G. Judge suggest a basis for choosing a member of the divergence family. The Colloquio is addressed to a general mathematical audience, and especially meant to attract graduate students and advanced undergraduate students. The lectures are intended to be not too technical, in fields of wide interest. They must provide an overview of the general topic, possibly in a historical perspective, together with a description of more recent progress. The idea of collecting the materials from these lectures and publishing them in annual volumes came out recently, as a recognition of their intrinsic mathematical interest, and also with the aim of preserving memory of these events. ?

Note de contenu :

Contributions by several authors such as Michael G. Such composite asymptotic expansions (CAsEs) are particularly well-suited to describing solutions of singularly perturbed ordinary differential equations near turning points. CAsEs imply inner and outer expansions near turning points. Thus our approach is closely related to the method of matched asymptotic expansions. CAsEs offer two unique advantages, however. First, they provide uniform expansions near a turning point and away from it. Second, a Gevrey version of CAsEs is available and detailed in the lecture notes. Three problems are presented in which CAsEs are useful. The first application concerns canard solutions near a multiple turning point. The second application concerns so-called non-smooth or angular canard solutions. Finally an Ackerberg-O?Malley resonance problem is solved

Note de contenu :

Four Introductory Examples -- Composite Asymptotic Expansions: General Study -- Composite Asymptotic Expansions: Gevrey Theory -- A Theorem of Ramis-Sibuya Type -- Composite Expansions and Singularly Perturbed Differential Equations -- Applications -- Historical Remarks -- References -- Index

Permalink :

http://genes.bibli.fr/opac/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=101604

Permalink :

http://genes.bibli.fr/opac/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=101246

The purpose of this text is to design practically efficient algorithms for solving wide classes of combinatorial optimization problems. Researches, students and engineers will benefit from new bounds and branching rules in development efficient branch-and-bound type computational algorithms. This book examines applications for solving the Traveling Salesman Problem and its variations, Maximum Weight Independent Set Problem, Different Classes of Allocation and Cluster Analysis as well as some classes of Scheduling Problems. Data Correcting Algorithms in Combinatorial Optimization introduces the data correcting approach to algorithms which provide an answer to the following questions: how to construct a bound to the original intractable problem and find which element of the corrected instance one should branch such that the total size of search tree will be minimized. The PC time needed for solving intractable problems will be adjusted with the requirements for solving real world problems.?

Permalink :

http://genes.bibli.fr/opac/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=97572

Randers metrics derive from the research on General Relativity Theory and have been applied in many areas of the natural sciences. They can also be naturally deduced as the solution of the Zermelo navigation problem. The book provides readers not only with essential findings on Randers metrics but also the core ideas and methods which are useful in Finsler geometry. It will be of significant interest to researchers and practitioners working in Finsler geometry, even in differential geometry or related natural fields.Xinyue Cheng is a Professor at the School of Mathematics and Statistics of Chongqing University of Technology, China. Under mild diagrammatic hypotheses, we prove that the growth of the degree of the colored Jones polynomials is a boundary slope of an essential surface in the knot complement. We show that certain coefficients of the polynomial measure how far this surface is from being a fiber for the knot; in particular, the surface is a fiber if and only if a particular coefficient vanishes. We also relate hyperbolic volume to colored Jones polynomials. Our method is to generalize the checkerboard decompositions of alternating knots. Under mild diagrammatic hypotheses, we show that these surfaces are essential, and obtain an ideal polyhedral decomposition of their complement. We use normal surface theory to relate the pieces of the JSJ decomposition of the complement to the combinatorics of certain surface spines (state graphs). Since state graphs have previously appeared in the study of Jones polynomials, our method bridges the gap between quantum and geometric knot invariants

Note de contenu :

1 Introduction -- 2 Decomposition into 3?balls -- 3 Ideal Polyhedra -- 4 I?bundles and essential product disks -- 5 Guts and fibers -- 6 Recognizing essential product disks -- 7 Diagrams without non-prime arcs -- 8 Montesinos links -- 9 Applications -- 10 Discussion and questions

Permalink :

http://genes.bibli.fr/opac/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=101603

Stokes matrices form the extended monodromy data for a linear differential equation of one complex variable near an irregular singular point. The present volume presents the approach in terms of Stokes filtrations. For linear differential equations on a Riemann surface, it also develops the related notion of a Stokes-perverse sheaf. This point of view is generalized to holonomic systems of linear differential equations in the complex domain, and a general Riemann-Hilbert correspondence is proved for vector bundles with meromorphic connections on a complex manifold. Applications to the distributions solutions to such systems are also discussed, and various operations on Stokes-filtered local systems are analyzed

Permalink :

http://genes.bibli.fr/opac/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=101596

Each volume examines a number of key topics in the theory or applications of Lévy processes and pays tribute to the state of the art of this rapidly evolving subject with special emphasis on the non-Brownian world. The expository articles in this second volume cover two important topics in the area of Lévy processes. The first article by Serge Cohen reviews the most important findings on fractional Lévy fields to date in a self-contained piece, offering a theoretical introduction as well as possible applications and simulation techniques. The second article, by Alexey Kuznetsov, Andreas E. Kyprianou, and Victor Rivero, presents an up to date account of the theory and application of scale functions for spectrally negative Lévy processes, including an extensive numerical overview.

Permalink :

http://genes.bibli.fr/opac/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=101595

State of the art approaches using parameter sensitivity are discussed for enhancing model identifiability through joint analysis of model structure and data. Practical examples illustrate model development at various levels of complexity based on given physiological information. The sensitivity-based approaches for examining model identifiability are illustrated by means of specific modeling examples. The themes presented address the current problem of patient-specific model adaptation in the clinical setting, where data is typically limited

Note de contenu :

1 Merging Mathematical and Physiological Knowledge: Dimensions and Challenges -- 2 Mathematical Modeling of Physiological Systems -- 3 Parameter Selection Methods in Inverse Problem Formulation.- 4 Application of the Unscented Kalman Filtering to Parameter Estimation -- 5 Integrative and Reductionist Approaches to Modeling of Control of Breathing -- 6 Parameter Identification in a Respiratory Control System Model with Delay -- 7 Experimental Studies of Respiration and Apnea -- 8 Model Validation and Control Issues in the Respiratory System -- 9 Experimental Studies of the Baroreflex -- 10 Development of Patient Specific Cardiovascular Models Predicting Dynamics in Response to Orthostatic Stress Challenges -- 11 Parameter Estimation of a Model for Baroreflex Control of Unstressed Volume

Permalink :

http://genes.bibli.fr/opac/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=101600

It is structured into different chapters, written by outstanding experts in the field. Many fundamental issues are considered, such as: the mathematical representation of vascular geometries extracted from medical images, modelling blood rheology and the complex multilayer structure of the vascular tissue, and its possible pathologies, the mechanical and chemical interaction between blood and vascular walls, and the different scales coupling local and systemic dynamics. All of these topics introduce challenging mathematical and numerical problems, demanding for advanced analysis and efficient simulation techniques, and pay constant attention to applications of relevant clinical interest. This book is addressed to graduate students and researchers in the field of bioengineering, applied mathematics and medicine, wishing to engage themselves in the fascinating task of modeling the cardiovascular system or, more broadly, physiological flows.

Permalink :

http://genes.bibli.fr/opac/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=97637

The main reason for this ubiquity is the wide and diverse range of applications, such as vehicular traffic, supply chains, blood flow, irrigation channels, data networks and others. This book presents an extensive set of notes by world leaders on the main mathematical techniques used to address such problems, together with investigations into specific applications. The main focus is on partial differential equations in networks, but ordinary differential equations and optimal transport are also included. Moreover, the modeling is completed by analysis, numerics, control and optimization of flows in networks. The book will be a valuable resource for every researcher or student interested in the subject

Note de contenu :

<p>A User?s Guide to Optimal Transport -- Hyperbolic Conservation Laws: an Illustrated Tutorial -- Derivation of Non-Local Macroscopic Traffic Equations and Consistent Traffic Pressures from Microscopic Car-Following Models -- On the Controversy around Daganzo?s Requiem for and Aw-Rascle?s Resurrection of Second-Order Traffic Flow Models -- Theoretical vs. Empirical Classification and Prediction of Congested Traffic States -- Self-Organized Network Flows -- Operation Regimes and Slower-is-Faster-Effect in the Control of Traffic Intersections -- Modeling and Optimization of Scalar Flows on Networks -- The Wave Equation: Control and Numerics</p>

Permalink :

http://genes.bibli.fr/opac/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=101598

When the differential operator under discussion is of second order a variety of tools are available for dealing with such problems, including boundary integral methods, variational methods, harmonic measure techniques, and methods based on classical harmonic analysis. When the differential operator is of higher-order (as is the case, e.g., with anisotropic plate bending when one deals with a fourth order operator) only a few options could be successfully implemented. In the 1970s Alberto Calderón, one of the founders of the modern theory of Singular Integral Operators, advocated the use of layer potentials for the treatment of higher-order elliptic boundary value problems. The present monograph represents the first systematic treatment based on this approach. This research monograph lays, for the first time, the mathematical foundation aimed at solving boundary value problems for higher-order elliptic operators in non-smooth domains using the layer potential method and addresses a comprehensive range of topics, dealing with elliptic boundary value problems in non-smooth domains including layer potentials, jump relations, non-tangential maximal function estimates, multi-traces and extensions, boundary value problems with data in Whitney?Lebesque spaces, Whitney?Besov spaces, Whitney?Sobolev- based Lebesgue spaces, Whitney?Triebel?Lizorkin spaces,Whitney?Sobolev-based Hardy spaces, Whitney?BMO and Whitney?VMO spaces.

Note de contenu :

1 Introduction -- 2 Smoothness scales and Caldeón-Zygmund theory in the scalar-valued case -- 3 Function spaces of Whitney arrays -- 4 The double multi-layer potential operator -- 5 The single multi-layer potential operator -- 6 Functional analytic properties of multi-layer potentials and boundary value problems

Permalink :

http://genes.bibli.fr/opac/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=101599

Moreover, a number of biomathematicians started working in biomedical institutions. The book is characterized by a coherent view of tumor modeling, based on the concept that mathematical modeling is (with medicine and molecular biology) one of the three pillars of molecular medicine. Indeed this volume is characterized by a well-structured presence of a large number of biomedical scientists directly working in Mathematical or Systems Biomedicine, and of a number biomathematicians working in hospitals. This give to this book an unprecedented tone, providing an original interdisciplinary insight into the biomedical applications. Finally, all biomedical contributors were asked to briefly summarize in one section of their contributes their point of view on her/his own interactions with quantitative scientists working in Systems Biomedicine

Note de contenu :

Part I Towards a Comprehensive Theory of Cancer Growth -- Combining Game Theory and Graph Theory to Model Interactions between Cells in the Tumor Microenvironment -- Growth as the Root of all Evil in Carcinomas: Synergy between pH Buffering and Anti-Angiogenesis prevents Emergence of Hallmarks of Cancer -- Phase Transitions in Cancer -- Part II Cancer Related Signalling Pathways -- Spatio-Temporal Modelling of Intracellular Signalling Pathways: Transcription Factors, Negative Feedback Systems and Oscillations -- Understanding Cell Fate Decisions by Identifying Crucial System Dynamics -- Modelling Biochemical Pathways with the Calculus of Looping Sequences -- Dynamic Simulations of Pathways Downstream of TGF<i>?</i>, Wnt and EGF-Family Growth Factors, in Colorectal Cancer, including Mutations and Treatments with Onco-Protein Inhibitors -- Part III Basic Mechanisms of Tumor Progression -- Some Results on the Population Behavior of Cancer Stem Cells -- Glucose Metabolism in Multicellular Spheroids, ATP Production and Effects of Acidity -- Cell-Cell Interactions in Solid Tumors - the Role of Cancer Stem Cells -- Hybrid Cellular Potts Model for Solid Tumor Growth -- Part IV Tumor-Immune System Interplay and Immunotherapy -- Computational Models as Novel Tools for Cancer Vaccines -- On the Dynamics of Tumor-Immune System Interactions and Combined Chemo- and Immunotherapy -- Modeling the Kinetics of the Immune Response -- Part V Computational Method for Improving Chemotherapy.- Optimizing Cancer Chemotherapy: from Mathematical Theories to Clinical Treatment -- A Systems Biomedicine Approach for Chronotherapeutics Optimization: Focus on the Anticancer Drug Irinotecan -- Modeling the Dynamics of HCV Infected Cells to Tailor Antiviral Therapy in Clinical Practice: Can This Approach Fit for Neoplastic Cells? -- Introducing Drug Transport Early in the Design of Hypoxia Selective Anticancer Agents Using a Mathematical Modelling Approach -- <i>Top-Down</i> Multiscale Simulation of Tumor Response to Treatment in the Context of In Silico Oncology.

Note de contenu :

Logica e Teoria degli insiemi -- Analisi matematica -- Probabilità e Statistica

Permalink :

http://genes.bibli.fr/opac/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=101247

Each course discusses computational and algorithmic aspects that have recently emerged at the interface of group theory and combinatorics, with a strong focus on probabilistic methods and results. The courses served as a forum for devising new strategic approaches and for discussing the main open problems to be solved in the further development of each area. The book represents a valuable resource for advanced lecture courses. Researchers at all levels are introduced to the main methods and the state-of-the-art, leading up to the very latest developments. One primary aim of the book?s approach and design is to enable postgraduate students to make immediate use of the material presented.

Note de contenu :

Martin W. While the conjecture is still open today in 2012, its study has revealed interesting arithmetic for curves and opened connections, for example, to the question whether the Brauer-Manin obstruction is the only one against rational points on curves. This monograph begins by laying the foundations for the space of sections of the fundamental group extension of an algebraic variety. Then, arithmetic assumptions on the base field are imposed and the local-to-global approach is studied in detail. The monograph concludes by discussing analogues of the section conjecture created by varying the base field or the type of variety, or by using a characteristic quotient or its birational analogue in lieu of the fundamental group extension

Note de contenu :

Part I Foundations of Sections -- 1 Continuous Non-abelian H1 with Profinite Coefficients.-2 The Fundamental Groupoid -- 3 Basic Geometric Operations in Terms of Sections -- 4 The Space of Sections as a Topological Space -- 5 Evaluation of Units -- 6 Cycle Classes in Anabelian Geometry -- 7 Injectivity in the Section Conjecture -- Part II Basic Arithmetic of Sections -- 7 Injectivity in the Section Conjecture -- 8 Reduction of Sections -- 9 The Space of Sections in the Arithmetic Case and the Section Conjecture in Covers -- Part III On the Passage from Local to Global -- 10 Local Obstructions at a <i>p</i>-adic Place -- 11 Brauer-Manin and Descent Obstructions -- 12 Fragments of Non-abelian Tate?Poitou Duality -- Part IV Analogues of the Section Conjecture -- 13 On the Section Conjecture for Torsors -- 14 Nilpotent Sections -- 15 Sections over Finite Fields -- 16 On the Section Conjecture over Local Fields -- 17 Fields of Cohomological Dimension 1 -- 18 Cuspidal Sections and Birational Analogues

Permalink :

http://genes.bibli.fr/opac/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=101594

As a centered Gaussian process, it is characterized by the stationarity of its increments and a medium- or long-memory property which is in sharp contrast with martingales and Markov processes. FBm has become a popular choice for applications where classical processes cannot model these non-trivial properties; for instance long memory, which is also known as persistence, is of fundamental importance for financial data and in internet traffic. The mathematical theory of fBm is currently being developed vigorously by a number of stochastic analysts, in various directions, using complementary and sometimes competing tools. This book is concerned with several aspects of fBm, including the stochastic integration with respect to it, the study of its supremum and its appearance as limit of partial sums involving stationary sequences, to name but a few. The book is addressed to researchers and graduate students in probability and mathematical statistics. With very few exceptions (where precise references are given), every stated result is proved

Note de contenu :

1. The courses took place during the C.I.M.E. Session "Stability and Bifurcation Problems for Non-Autonomous Differential Equations," held in Cetraro, Italy, June 19-25 2011. Anna Capietto and Jean Mawhin lectured on nonlinear boundary value problems; they applied the Maslov index and degree-theoretic methods in this context. Rafael Ortega discussed the theory of twist maps with nonperiodic phase and presented applications. Peter Kloeden and Sylvia Novo showed how dynamical methods can be used to study the stability/bifurcation properties of bounded solutions and of attracting sets for nonautonomous differential and functional-differential equations. Successful applications in these situations require a sound understanding of both the underlying theory and methodological advances in handling real-life problems. This book seeks to effectively blend theory and applications while presenting readers with many practical examples. For instance, in the medical device environment, it is important to know if the newly established lab can reproduce the instrument/assay results from the established but outdating lab. When there is a disagreement, it is important to differentiate the sources of disagreement. In addition to agreement coefficients, accuracy and precision coefficients are introduced and utilized to characterize these sources. This book will appeal to a broad range of statisticians, researchers, practitioners and students, in areas of biomedical devices, psychology, medical research, and others, in which agreement assessment are needed. Many practical illustrative examples will be presented throughout the book in a wide variety of situations for continuous and categorical data.

Note de contenu :

Introduction -- Continuous Data -- Categorical Data -- Sample Size and Power -- A Unified Model for Coninutous and Categorical Data -- A Comparative Model for Continuous and Categorical Data -- Workshop

Permalink :

http://genes.bibli.fr/opac/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=97553

In certain biological systems, stochastic effects may even enhance a signal, thus providing a biological motivation for the noise observed in living systems. Recent advances in stochastic analysis and increasing computing power facilitate the analysis of more biophysically realistic models, and this book provides researchers in computational neuroscience and stochastic systems with an overview of recent developments. Key concepts are developed in chapters written by experts in their respective fields. Topics include: one-dimensional homogeneous diffusions and their boundary behavior, large deviation theory and itsapplication in stochastic neurobiological models, a review of mathematical methods for stochastic neuronal integrate-and-fire models, stochastic partial differential equation models in neurobiology, and stochastic modeling of spreading cortical depression

Note de contenu :

1 Introduction to stochastic models in biology -- 2 One-dimensional homogeneous diffusions -- 3 A brief introduction to large deviations theory -- 4 Some numerical methods for rare events simulation and analysis -- 5 Stochastic Integrate and Fire models: a review on mathematical methods and their applications -- 6 Stochastic partial differential equations in Neurobiology: linear and nonlinear models for spiking neurons -- 7 Deterministic and stochastic FitzHugh-Nagumo systems -- 8 Stochastic modeling of spreading cortical depression

Permalink :

http://genes.bibli.fr/opac/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=101597

It also has numerous applications in the natural and social sciences (for instance in financial mathematics or theoretical quantum mechanics) and therefore appears in physics and economics curricula as well. However, existing approaches to stochastic analysis either presuppose various concepts from measure theory and functional analysis or lack full mathematical rigour. This short book proposes to solve the dilemma: By adopting E. Nelson's "radically elementary" theory of continuous-time stochastic processes, it is based on a demonstrably consistent use of infinitesimals and thus permits a radically simplified, yet perfectly rigorous approach to stochastic calculus and its fascinating applications, some of which (notably the Black-Scholes theory of option pricing and the Feynman path integral) are also discussed in the book

Note de contenu :

1 Infinitesimal calculus, consistently and accessibly -- 2 Radically elementary probability theory -- 3 Radically elementary stochastic integrals -- 4 The radically elementary Girsanov theorem and the diffusion invariance principle -- 5 Excursion to nancial economics: A radically elementary approach to the fundamental theorems of asset pricing -- 6 Excursion to financial engineering: Volatility invariance in the Black-Scholes model -- 7 A radically elementary theory of Itô diffusions and associated partial differential equations -- 8 Excursion to mathematical physics: A radically elementary definition of Feynman path integrals -- 9 A radically elementary theory of Lévy processes -- 10 Final remarks

Permalink :

http://genes.bibli.fr/opac/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=101602

As is commonly encountered, this powerful mathematical object is very hard to calculate. Apart from Quillen's calculations of finite fields and Suslin's calculation of algebraically closed fields, few complete calculations were available before the discovery of homological invariants offered by motivic cohomology and topological cyclic homology. This book covers the connection between algebraic K-theory and Bökstedt, Hsiang and Madsen's topological cyclic homology and proves that the difference between the theories are ?locally constant?. The usefulness of this theorem stems from being more accessible for calculations than K-theory, and hence a single calculation of K-theory can be used with homological calculations to obtain a host of ?nearby? calculations in K-theory. For instance, Quillen's calculation of the K-theory of finite fields gives rise to Hesselholt and Madsen's calculations for local fields, and Voevodsky's calculations for the integers give insight into the diffeomorphisms of manifolds. In addition to the proof of the full integral version of the local correspondence between K-theory and topological cyclic homology, the book provides an introduction to the necessary background in algebraic K-theory and highly structured homotopy theory; collecting all necessary tools into one common framework. It relies on simplicial techniques, and contains an appendix summarizing the methods widely used in the field. The book is intended for graduate students and scientists interested in algebraic K-theory, and presupposes a basic knowledge of algebraic topology

Note de contenu :

<p>Algebraic K-theory -- Gamma-spaces and S-algebras -- Reductions -- Topological Hochschild Homology -- The Trace K ?
