Cambridge University Press Année de publication : 2007 Collection : Cambridge monographs on applied and computational mathematics num. 24 Importance : XII-224 p. Présentation : fig. Format : 24 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-521-86559-3 Note générale : Bibliogr. p. 214-221. Index Langues : Anglais (eng) Descripteurs : Apprentissage automatique , Approximation fonctionnelle Tags : Learning theory Théorie de l'approximation Index. décimale : 216 Statistique computationnelle Résumé : The goal of learning theory is to approximate a function from sample values. To attain this goal learning theory draws on a variety of diverse subjects, specifically statistics, approximation theory, and algorithmics. Ideas from all these areas blended to form a subject whose many successful applications have triggered a rapid growth during the last two decades. This book gives a general overview of the theoretical foundations of the subject emphasizing the approximation theory, while still giving a balanced overview. It is based on courses taught by the authors, and is reasonably self-contained so will appeal to a broad spectrum of researchers in learning theory and adjacent fields. It will also serve as an introduction for graduate students and others entering the field, who wish to see how the problems raised in learning theory relate to other disciplines. This is the first book to offer a rapid introduction to the subject, illustrating the surprising effectiveness of a simple tool. Bridging the gap between classical mathematics and current evolving research, the authors present the topic in detail and follow a heuristic, example-based approach, assuming only a basic background in functional analysis, probability and some elementary notions of algebraic geometry. They cover new results in both pure and applied mathematics and introduce techniques that have a wide range of potential impacts on modern quantitative and qualitative science.
